Surgeon Major General Sir John By Cole Reade, KCB

Just finished an interesting framing project about Surgeon Major General Sir John By Cole Reade, KCB.  (What does KCB mean, you aks?  Go to:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Bath )

Our client had a photograph of Sir Reade (which we had lovingly reproduced by Janice of LUX), 7 medals dating from the late 1800's and early 1900's, and a plaque.

Our new acquaintance, Mr. Louis Grimshaw of Kingston, http://www.grimshaw-military.on.ca/) cleaned up the medals beautifully and "Court Mounted" them (which he tells us is most likely how Sir Reade wore them when in attendance in Queen Victoria's Court. (http://goarticles.com/article/Court-Mounting-and-Swing-Mounting-Medals/2083240/).

So here is the finished product!

Stained Glass? Yes!

Here's an interesting work of art.  It's a stained glass piece, and our clients wanted to be able to enjoy both sides of the piece.

Enter Jimmy and his talents in the woodshop.  First he cut down the moulding with the table saw so that the rebate depth was half the thickness of the stained glass.

Then he ran it through the saw again to widen the coverage of the rebate so that it would cover the caming of the piece.

To protect the moulding finish during its ride through the table saw, he put ultra-low tack tape on the face of the frame.  This he easily peeled it off afterwards, leaving the frame's pristine finish.

After cutting and joining two identical frames with his new and improved moulding, Jimmy glued them together around the piece and fastened the frames with countersink screws.

Then we filled all screw holes and the long seam where the two frames meet with a custom coloured nail hole filler.

The finished piece will hang in a window on chains attached to eye hooks in the top rail of the frame.
FORE!!
Here is the finished front face of the stained glass.

Smokin' Joe's Boxing Gloves!

We often get asked: " Can you frame____________?" (Fill in the blank with whatever!)

Well, our answer is always "YES!"

This week we are completing one of our most interesting shadowbox projects to date.  We have Smokin' Joe Frazier's autographed boxing gloves, his boxing robe, and a photograph of him with our client.

The depth of the objects made for fun in the woodshop for Jimmy, where he cut & joined and then stacked 4 oversized frames together to create over 6" of interior depth.

Jimmy with his oversize frame stack
I spent my time sewing the gloves into their own little box, and arranging the robe using a foamcore form and sewing it into the semblance of a person's (well Smokin' Joe's!) back.

Using the existing stitches on the gloves,  I mounted them into the mat box.
With a little help from our girl Wednesday--Sharon, we sewed the robe onto a mat board and then mounted it into place on the backing board.

The full length robe was folded, arranged and sewed into shape.

Our wizard helped out by cutting our oversized mats perfectly, and making our boxing gloves box.

A whole lot of building up and filling in with acid free foamcore, and the mat pack is finished!
Its frame lays on the table behind it.

Next we will be fitting it all together.  We will be completing the project with Museum Glass by Truvue, the highest UV protection you can get and the clearest framing glass available. www.tru-vue.com

Ok so here it is all fit together on our table.  Really hard to get a good picture!!

At the client's house,  we determined where the piece will go, and at what height.  Jim carefully installed a z-clip on the back of the frame as well as on the wall.  These are perfect for huge and heavy installations like this.  You can get them at one of our fav stores, Lee Valley:

The client was very helpful and he and Jim got Smokin' Joe hanging.  I spent my time trying to get a good photo with the iphone, but alas this is the best that I got.  I must have been falling down!
